Get Up and Write!

I began the workshop in 2020.
It is, and always will be, free & open to all.

Now, Get Up regulars J.P. Tilleman and Kat Meltzer are helping me launch a Monthly Donors Club.

Read Kat's note below, and then, if you'd like to donate, click an amount in the box below.

A note from Kat Meltzer

I joined the Get Up and Write community a little over a year ago as a way to stay connected to creativity while far from home in the midst of a family crisis. Get Up and Write has become a lifeline for me, and maybe for you as well.

As a writer, I know half the battle is getting one's ass in the chair. Thanks to our Wednesday meetings, I know I will have at least one hour of focused creativity in a safe space.

Charlie's prompts very sneakily guide me through the craft of storytelling: pace, voice, dynamics of language and action. And almost always, they touch a part of my soul and I end up writing something unexpected.

When we break out to share our work, I get to spend time with a kindred spirit, exchanging our newborn words and encouragement.

When we write postcards to heroes of the resistance, I add my voice to the fight.

When the final music video ends, I return to my life feeling inspired and stronger, with new writing to chew on for the rest of the week.

Without Get Up and Write, I would do none of these things. And without Charlie, there would be no Get Up and Write.

Charlie created Get Up and Write five years ago during the Pandemic. Since then, the world has become even more dangerous. And every Wednesday we gather to create, share our voices, and take action. Get Up and Write is in itself an act of resistance.

Charlie wants to keep Get Up and Write going for at least another five years. Here's how we can make that happen:

#1

Become a monthly sponsor.

You can donate at one of four levels: $10, $25, $50, or $100* per month.

It's easy. Click here, pick your level, and make a recurring donation from your credit card.

#2

Whether or not you're able to donate, keep coming on Wednesday mornings.

Charlie is firm about not charging admission. Get Up and Write will continue to be free and open to all. Everyone's presence is itself a gift.

#3

Keep inviting friends.

Our community grows organically based on recommendations, rather than advertising. That's part of why it feels safe.

Thank you all for making Get Up and Write what it is, and thank you, Charlie, for keeping our wonderful community alive.

 - Kat Meltzer

*For those who give at the $100 level, there's a special thank you gift...

Charlie will make a phone call to you or a friend in the voice of Bernie Sanders. Great for a birthday, anniversary, feeling depressed, etc. One call per year, to anyone you choose. (If you'd like Charlie to use a different voice, say Pete Seeger or Oliver Sacks, he's happy to do that, too.)

NOTE:
You can also make a one-time donation via Venmo @Charles-Varon, or send a check to â€‹â€‹Charlie Varon, 31 Chattanooga St, SF CA 94114
